Weekend Movie Experiences

So, did anyone catch any movies this weekend? Feel free to read (or not) my reviews of Reconstruction and Everyday People, both of which I highly recommend. I'll be catching Control Room Tuesday night. What movies did you see?

Note: if you don't have access to the syllabus, email me and I'll send you another copy. If you need any of the other handouts, also let me know, and I'll be happy to send them along.

You might like The Notebook, which is coming out in a few days. It's based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, and the cast looks pretty impressive (especially Gena Rowlands). Nick Cassavetes is also a fairly interesting director. That being said, I'm not the best judge of romantic movies.

I am excited about Before Sunset, Richard Linklater's follow-up to Before Sunrise. "Sunrise" is about ten years old and focuses on Jessie (Ethan Hawke) as an American student who meets and talks all nioght with Celine (Julie Delpy) during his last night in Europe. "Sunset" imagines what happens if they met again ten years later.

I saw Troy over the weekend - it was definitely an impressive movie as far as the sets and effects go. It's not something I would probably sit through again though. Two hours and 45 minutes is a bit long and the movie seems to drag a bit in some places.
The movie almost seemed like an amalgation of Lord of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan (the storming of the beach), and Braveheart. But it was pretty entertaining. If you're a big fan of violence and bloody fighting this film would probably be right up your alley.
And yes, "Brad, horse both wooden" applies here.

I liked "Sand and Fog" quite a bit, especially in terms of the moral dilemmas it raises. There's another film, "In the Bedroom," based on a short story by the same author whose work provided the basis for "Sand and Fog."

Here's my original review of "Sand and Fog" if you're interested.

Last night I watched Dogma with a bunch of friends because apparently it's some kind of sin if you've never seen a Jay and Silent Bob movie. It was probably the most bizarre movie I've ever seen (except Meshes of the Afternoon), but it was hilarious. The combination of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and Alanis Morrisette's little camio were great, and I really liked the camera work in the train fight scene. I was probably one of the last Tech kids to see it, but if you haven't, go watch it. I usually don't like movies like it, but Dogma is really funny.
