First off, I believe that this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The story was ok, but the acting, script, and pace were terrible. I have a hard time believing that Scottie thought he was being sneaky when following Madeline in the beginning of the movie. If his actions were representative of how he was as a detective, he must have been horrible at it. I thought it was very interesting that the whole premise of the beginning of the movie was for Scottie to follow a lady that's a mental case - but in the end he's the one that becomes mental with dressing Judy up as Madeline. While the beginning of the movie kept a decent pace, the second half was really slow and on top of that, the final scene was a total let down. I was very happy to finally see those credits appear.

I thought the movie was pretty good. I think that the whole idea of the movie being unrealistic (as far as Scottie's detective skills, among other things) probably stems more from the time period in which the movie was made moreso than the actual quality of the movie, plot and acting themselves.
I agree with the comments above that the movie is great solely because of the multiple levels on which the plot functions. While there are definitely some holes in the plot, such as the scene at the hotel (where Madeline's mysterious disappearing act is never explained) and Midge's disappearance from Act III, the movie still accomplishes what it set out to do - disturb the mind. I found myself unfulfilled when the movie ended, and I think that was probably Hitchcock's intention.

I didn't really like this movie very much. I felt that the main characters, Scottie, Midge, and Madaline/Judy, were all very weak . Scottie was controlled by his fears the entire movie, and only over came them when pushed by obsession with Madaline. Judy let Scottie control her from the moment they met. Midge had obvious problems, and seemed to try to cover her unrequited love for Scottie with professionalism and humor.

I also felt as thought the end was a little contrived. Judy was sort of thrown into the movie with no development. This made Scottie's ability to walk all over her sort of pathetic and odd. The scene at the top of the tower at the end was also out of nowhere. Judy made almost no attempt to get away from Scottie when he dragged her up the tower, and said almost nothing the whole ride there. Where did this nun come from? Why was Judy so scared? It just seemed that after Madaline died the movie rushed to an ending.

I thought that the film was presented well. From what point of view we see the movie is very important. For most of the film, the audience is with Scottie. It is almost as if we see the world through him. The camera oftens switches to the view from his eyes, especially when he is following Madilene. This allows us to understand a little about him and his motivations.
However, there is a distinct shift in the film after the first fall from the tower. I think the shift comes in the scene in the hotel when Judy and Scottie talk for the first time. When he leaves, instead of going with him, the audience stays with Judy. For the first time, we learn something that Scottie doesn't know. I think that from this point on we look at Scottie from the outside and are able to understand even more. He gets really creepy and weird near the end. His obsession is truely seen.

I thought Vertigo was a very interesting movie. It almost genius how it seemed like two movies in one. On one side it was like a love movie, on the other side it was the movie about a mans fear of heights. It was cool how the two were combined.
