Also a quick reminder for students who didn't attend the class screening: there are several versions of Blonde Venus, and the opening sequence, with the women swimming in the lake was not on the film as it appeared in Hollywood.

In response to cvictor I think it might help to keep in mind that this film was made in an era where it was common to use strong and beautiful female characters as the main focus of films. In Blonde Venus, I think that the character of Martina Dietrich, however over played it may seem to us today, must have struck the audiences of that time with awe and admiration.
Right, the star system of the 1930s often led to strong female lead caharacters that a largely female audience could identify with. We'll talk more about how the star system informed this film on Tuesday.
I do think the film is complicated by the fact that we don't get a clear sense of what Helen's motivations are for some of her actions.
In watching Blonde Venus, I was a little torn. I was not really sure what to think. Helen is a very interesing character. My reaction to her is about the same as my reaction toward the Tim Robbins character in "The Player". She is the main character. There are times in the movie when I feel sorry for her and I want her to succeed. But, on the other hand she has done an absolutely horrible thing and needs to be held responsible. And as with Griffin, in the last section of the movie I lost all feeling for her. After she is found in Paris living the high life, it's very hard to like her at all.
The other thing that bothers me is the ending. It is quite ambiguous. I think that a little light is shed on it by understanding the changes made in the film. The assigned article helped a lot, but the reconsiliation still seems very fake.

I wasnt really sure of how the audience was supposed to feel for the main character. Yeah she lost her son and money and husband. But she brought all the trouble to herself. She knew what she was doing was wrong, so it was hard for me to feel for her.

I agree with the majority of the class I did enjoy this film. It was one of the earliest films where I saw a woman showing power and strength over men, in a way. She used her beauty and her body to manipulate men through the movie. The director never gave the audience a solid answer on how she got the money for her husband and got out of some situations. I believed that she used her body in some instances. He gave us hints in some scenes. Another comment on Blonde Venus was that she lived in the moment and never had a plan or thought out what she was going to do.
